August 17, 2008 - ASHHS Quarterly meeting 1:30 P.M. at theAmerican Legion Hall, Walcott, Iowa.ASHHS Quarterly Meeting - Aug. 17th Catherine Stortz-Ripley, News Editor of the Chillicothe, MO Constitution Tribune will be the guest speaker at the American/Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society's (ASHHS) next quarterly meeting which will be held August 17, 2008, 1:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 121 Bryant St. Walcott, Iowa. Catherine will present a program relating to Otto Rohwedder and the invention of the Bread Slicing Machine. While Otto Rohwedder, was born in Des Moines, he grew up in the Davenport area where his father, Claus, was a well known stone mason. After a short career in the Jewelry business Otto undertook his desire to develop a machine to slice bread. While developing a History Book for Chillicothe MO. Catherine discovered the first use of the Bread Slicing machine was at a bakery in Chillicothe and undertook a search to learn more about this subject which included an interview with Otto's son Richard. The program will be a summary of efforts of Catherine and others to record this historical event. Light refreshments will be provided. The American Legion Hall is handicap accessible. September 27 -The 2008 OKTOBERFEST, hosted by American/Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society (ASHHS), German American Heritage Center (GACH), and German American National Congress (DANK) is being held Saturday, September 27th at the Starlite Ballroom, Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, 2825 West Locust Street, Davenport, Iowa. The doors will open at 11:00 a.m. Meals will be catered by HyVee - lunch11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and evening meal 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Activities include a card tournament of German Skat, Sheephead (Schafkopf), and 500 from 12:00 noon to 2:30 p.m. Music will be furnished by the Brass Notes from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Karl & the Country Dutchman from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. For more information call Bob & Mary Burchett 563-355-6274 or Foline Koch 563-322-3772
